Baz Grainger worked in the fashion industry for over 20 years (from designer through to design director) before a long-term passion for garden design led him to change career and retrain in 2017. Marrying his passion for fashion and garden design, he formed his garden design consultancy, The Landscape Tailor in 2020
Inspired by his many visits to the Chelsea Flower Show, Baz has recently completed his first ever show garden at RHS Hampton Court in 2021 and was delighted to receive a Silver Medal for
Baz Grainger’s garden designs take their inspiration from the juxtaposition of the natural and the man-made with the belief that sustainability has to be at the forefront of all design in the 21st century.
Products and materials used for hard landscaping are sustainably sourced or recycled to minimize their environmental footprint. For soft landscaping, Baz likes to use plants that create impact, but are sympathetic to their environs and the UK climate. Form and structure provide year-round interest, whilst a considered colour palette and planting scheme adds variation throughout the seasons.
“I like to start a landscape design with good structure. This can be made up of hard landscaping or by using trees and shrubs. Once there is a good frame-work in place, I look at how height and depth can be incorporated into the design. Last but not least is the addition of colour and how it can be extended using successional planting”.
